Iraq’s Al-Nasr Coalition which is headed by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said in a statement that there is no legitimacy in turning around the largest bloc and called for separating between the legislative and executive courses of work.

The statement, directed to the public opinion and political powers, said the parliament’s first session is the basis in terms of finalizing the issue of the largest bloc according to the 2010 federal court decision. It added that the largest bloc must be specified according to the givens of the first parliamentary session.

Political blocs are waiting for the federal government’s response to finalize the issue of the largest bloc as during the first parliamentary session, controversy erupted over the right of more than one coalition to form the cabinet.

Al-Nasr’s statement also said that constitutionally speaking, a new bloc cannot be formed and another method at the expense of finalizing who the largest bloc is cannot be adopted. It added that turning around the principle of the largest bloc will count as a constitutional violation which parties that adopt it are fully responsible for.

It also said that largest bloc documented at the parliament’s first session is the one concerned in appointing a candidate to form a cabinet and it must officially name him so he gains the required legitimacy and power to form a government.

The statement also said that the policy of agreements between political parties must not be at the expense of unity and national security and sovereignty adding that all agreements which are not based on the constitution and its provisions lack legitimacy.

The statement, which comes amid unofficial reports that political blocs have agreed to support nominating Adil Abdul-Mahdi for the premiership, also warned of regional and international interferences in the political process and held parties that welcome such interferences responsible for their repercussions.

Meanwhile, MP Raed Fahmi in the Sairoon alliance said on Sunday that prominent candidate for the premiership Adil Abdul-Mahdi presented a set of conditions to political powers in exchange of agreeing to be nominated for the premiership.

According to Fahmi, Abdul-Mahdi’s conditions mainly focused on the complete freedom to select the ministers away from any pressure from political blocs.

Fahmi also said that Abdul-Mahdi asked to specify the governmental program himself while taking into consideration the visions of political powers and preventing partisan and political interferences in political work.

According to well-informed sources, political parties close to Sairoon which is led by Muqtada al-Sadr and to the Fatah Alliance led by Hadi al-Amiri spoke of nominating Adil Abdul-Mahdi, a former leader in the Islamic Supreme Council, for the premiership with the support of Al-Sistani reference.

Abdul-Mahdi has not yet officially commented but he had said that he stopped writing his editorial in Aladala newspaper because he’s busy with political discussions. However, he did not elaborate any further.

Abdul-Mahdi was the vice president in 2005 after he was a major candidate for the premiership post. He later conceded the post to Ibrahim al-Jaafari and became minister of finance. He was the vice president of Jalal Talabani during Nuri al-Maliki’s second term as prime minister and he later resigned from his post as a result of political disputes. Abdul-Mahdi was also a minister of oil but he resigned from the post in March 2016.
