Masrour Barzani: We Won’t Give up on Our Right to Independence
ERBIL — Politburo member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), Masrour Barzani, has reiterated that they will not abandon their decades-long struggle for independence as it is the right of the people of Kurdistan.

He delivered a speech in Akre, Duhok province, as part of his party’s election campaign, inviting the people to vote for the party which stood with the people during hard times, and never stopped fighting for their right to self-determination.

Barzani reminded that in a few days there will be the first anniversary of the historic independence referendum of Kurdistan, saying that it was a huge achievement spearheaded by the KDP.

“The KDP has never compromised, and will never compromise on the legitimate rights of the people of Kurdistan,” the Kurdish senior official said.

“We have a long road ahead to determine the fate of Kurdistan.”

Masrour Barzani, who also serves as the chancellor of Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC), highlighted the role of Peshmerga and security forces in the war against the Islamic State, saying that without the sacrifices they paid, today’s security would have not been possible.

“We have to remember that we all owe the Peshmerga,” he pointed out.

Concerning the Kurdistan parliamentary election which is scheduled for 30 September, Barzani encouraged people to vote for the KDP in order to establish a strong government in Kurdistan that could face the future challenges.

“This is not the end. Unfortunately, enemies and their plots are still there. If it was not for the treason on 16 October [2017], we could probably celebrate bigger achievements now.”

Barzani reasserted that Kurds are wishing to live in the neighbourhood in peace, but will also not retreat from their struggle for freedom.

“We have now arrived at a point where no one could look down upon the people of Kurdistan. Therefore, we should loudly say it that we are proud to be from Kurdistan, we are proud to be part of this struggle, and we are proud to be KDP.”
