Kurdistan Regional Government Minister delivers Newroz message at the United Nations
Washington DC, USA (KRG.org) - Minister Falah Mustafa, the Head of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Department of Foreign Relations, joined representatives of 12 other countries to celebrate the United Nations annual International Day of Newroz, which marks the beginning of the Kurdish New Year and spring equinox.

The Iraqi Ambassador Mohamed Ali Alhakim, who is the Permanent Representative of Iraq to the UN, hosted Minister Mustafa at the Mission where both sides discussed ways in which to strengthen relations between the KRG and Iraqi missions in the United States.

They discussed the importance of highlighting the needs of the over a quarter of a million Syrian refugees in Kurdistan as well as finding ways of encouraging the greater UN community to recognise the crimes committed by the former regime against the Kurdish people of Iraq as genocide.

At the invitation of Ambassador Alhakim, Minister Mustafa delivered a New Year message at the UN where he spoke on behalf of all Iraqis in celebrating Newroz. His message was one of peace, hope, and new beginnings. He underscored the importance of celebrating Newroz because in it there is 'a sense of belonging, a sense of inclusiveness, and a sense of cultural identity'.

Minister Mustafa explained that, throughout history, Newroz for the Kurdish people has heralded a season of optimism and renewal, despite the enormous challenges faced by the people. He reiterated that Newroz marks a new beginning and provides opportunities to seek a new way forward, based on shared values and common interest, which could provide 'a better future for the people'.

Minister Mustafa concluded his remarks by wishing all Kurdish people throughout the world, and all those who celebrate this proud tradition worldwide, a happy and prosperous Newroz.

Later that day the Ambassador hosted a dinner reception attended by Minister Mustafa, staff members from the KRG US Representation and members of the Kurdish and Iraqi communities to celebrate Newroz. Minister Mustafa spoke to the attendees congratulating them on the occasion of Newroz and expressing that these types of gatherings promote the spirit of Neworz.
