Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon issued an apology after being arrested for disorderly conduct
ATLANTA, GA -- Actress Reese Witherspoon issued a statement on Sunday night apologizing for her "disrespectful" behavior which lead to her arrest on Friday.
The Academy Award-winning actress and her husband Jim Toth were arrested in Atlanta in the early hours of Firday morning. The police had pulled over their car on suspicion of drunken driving.
Toth, who was driving, failed the field sobriety test and as he was being dealt with by the police, Witherspoon began to argue with the police officer.
‘Do you know my name?’ she asked, hanging out of the car's window. She refused to obey the officer's orders to stay in the car and ignored his warning that she would be arrested if she left the car.
At that point, according to the police report, Witherspoon got out of the car again. She "stated that she was a ‘U.S. citizen’ and that she was allowed to ‘stand on American ground,’ " the report said.
She was then arrested for disorderly conduct.
On Sunday, Witherspoon released a statement saying she was "deeply embarrassed" by the incident. Apologizing for her "disrespectful" behavior, the actress said she had "nothing but respect for the police" and that she was "very sorry" for her behavior.
